A fundraiser has been launched to rebuild a "unique" outdoor classroom at Wallacewell Primary School after it was burnt to the ground in a fire on Saturday, January 18.

Parents, staff and members of the Robroyston community have rallied behind the cause and donated more than £700 in just three days.

So far the JustGiving fundraiser, set up by parents a day after the blaze, has reached £702 and is more than halfway to achieving its goal of £1,500.

The outdoor learning space was a new addition to the primary school and had only been in use since the beginning of the 2019/2020 school year.

Its destruction left the pupils and staff "devastated" and crowdfunding is the only way the school can ensure the finances for its replacement.

The crowdfunder reads: "Unfortunately, vandals burnt the schools unique outside classroom to the ground recently.

"The children and staff are devastated, as it was used by everyone, and they have no funding to rebuild this.

"The kids and staff would be elated if we could raise enough funds to have it rebuilt."

Scottish Fire and Rescue Services were alerted to the fire just before 9pm on the Saturday and two appliances were rushed to the scene.

A spokewoman said: “We received a call at 8.57pm on January 18 to Standburn Road in Glasgow. Two appliances were in attendance.

"Crews left the scene after ensuring the area was made safe.”

Wallacewell Primary School appealed to people and businesses in the area to help rebuild the much loved outdoor classroom.

It is expected the fire brigade will sign off the site on Friday after which the council will clear the site and ensure it is safe to use.

Once the flooring is assessed, the school hopes to get started on rebuilding the schoolroom as soon as possible.

One of the parents who donated to the fundraiser said: "Hope it gets rebuilt ASAP! My son in P1 was gutted on Monday morning."

According to headteacher Jane Lobjoie CCTV had caught a large number of youngsters in the playground shortly before the fire started at around 8pm.

However, as of Wednesday, January 22, the incident was not being treated as willful by police according to a spokesman.

Wallacewell Primary's headteacher is hopeful those responsible for the incident will be identified.
