A PLAN to reform the role of the Lord Provost will be debated by councillors.

A new Lord Provost is to be elected by Glasgow City Council today with one candidate each from the SNP and Labour.

The Greens want the role reformed and changes made to how the civic head is elected.

The city council is electing a new Lord Provost after Eva Bolander resigned following revelations that she had spent £8,000 of pounds of an allowance including shoes, coats and underwear.

She stepped down and said she should not have claimed for some items and she would be paying back some of the money.

The are calling for the candidates to make a speech to coucnillors stating why they shold get the job and for a free vote among the councillors.

Longer term the Green group wants the Lord Provost to give up their party afilliation and be completely impartial.

They also want any nominations for Provost to gain cross party support to prevent one party pushing a candidate through.

Green group co-convenor, Kim Long, said: “Greens believe in strengthening democracy and these reforms will ensure the Lord Provost role is one which embodies the civic leadership people expect.

"We need to rebuild trust in this office and our reforms would make the new Lord Provost more accountable to the whole Council.

“We’re hopeful councillors will agree that reforms are necessary and this is the right time to set them in motion.

“We’ve spoken with candidates for the current vacancy and they’ve expressed support for our proposals as well as demonstrating they’d be strong advocates for Glasgow. Our councillors will have a free choice of which candidate to back.”
