A man has been taken to hospital after a suspected shooting in North Lanarkshire.

Residents looked on in fear as armed police locked down Brunswick Gardens in Cumbernauld last night following the disturbance.

The alarm was raised shortly before 7pm.

A large police presence remained in the area overnight.

The condition of the man, who was taken by ambulance to hospital, is not yet known.

One terrified local told the Scottish Sun: "I heard two loud bangs about an hour ago and I think it is related.

"I think someone has been shot."

Another said: "Heard what sounded like two gunshots a wee while ago."

Police Scotland confirmed to the Glasgow Times that enquiries are ongoing but were unable to provide any further details regarding the incident. 

Local Facebook page Cumbernauld Community News, which boasts 10,000 followers, also updated residents on the incident.

They posted last night: "A number of people have contacted us to ask about the ongoing situation on Dullatur Road amid unconfirmed reports of a shooting.

"All we can confirm at this time is that armed Police officers are currently operating in the area following a call placed to them at 7:10pm this evening".

A police spokeswoman added: "Police attended Brunswick Gardens in Cumbernauld following a disturbance. 

"A man was taken by ambulance to hospital.

"Enquiries are ongoing and there was a continued police presence in the area overnight.

"No further information will be provided at this time".
