A pro-European Union celebration is to be held in Glasgow tomorrow night to mark the UK formally leaving the EU.

The Glasgow Loves EU group will gather under the Donald Dewar Statue at the Buchanan Galleries steps at 10.30pm on Friday, joined by Greens MSP Patrick Harvie and SNP MPs Philippa Whitford and Alyn Smith at the event.

It comes as the UK will officially leave the European Union 30 minutes later at 11pm.

The group plans to have a torchlit gathering singing Ode to Joy and Auld Lang Syne.

Those joining are urged to bring a torch or a mobile phone but no naked flames. Speeches will be made.

Organiser Clare Scanlan said: “We have been campaigning in Glasgow to reverse Brexit and sadly have to accept it is now taking place.

“But we believe that one day we can return to the European Union which would be the best thing for the country.

"Our event tomorrow will show we have not given up hope.

"We want to celebrate friendships across borders on the sad occasion of the UK's departure from the European Union.

“The event is cross-party and we are very keen that all pro-Europeans feel welcome whether unionist or nationalist.

“We will always be Europeans, and we are determined to keep our links with Europe strong and are keen to celebrate what unites us."
