GLASGOW’S Sports Person of the Year awards have honoured Scotland’s sporting heroes at a special ceremony in Glasgow City Chambers.

The awards celebrate the inspirational people leading the way in driving excellence in every area of sport in the city – from grassroots volunteers and school programmes to the achievements of professional clubs and elite athletes.

Chairman of Glasgow Life and Depute Leader of Glasgow City Council David McDonald said: “Last year was yet another fantastic step forward in Glasgow’s sporting journey and last night’s Sports Person of the Year Awards were an occasion to reflect on and applaud these achievements – both at a local and an international level.

“As a city, we were proud to welcome the European Athletics Indoor Championships for the first time in 2019, building on the momentum of the inaugural European Championships 2018 and further demonstrating our ability to host world-class events which showcase Glasgow on the global sporting stage.

“But it’s not just about the high profile events and the successes of our elite athletes - in the last year Glasgow has once again used sport to transform itself.

“For the seventh year in a row, Glasgow Club attendances over the city have topped six million, and membership now stands at 60,000.

"Impressively, junior membership of sports clubs is close to 21,000, up more than 350 per cent on 2009 figures.

“With more than 4500 coaches working with sports clubs in Glasgow and a similar number of volunteers, it is clear more and more Glaswegians are developing a passion for leading active, healthy lives – and making the most of the opportunities our city offers to do so.”

As well as recognising the successes of elite athletes, award categories highlighted the achievements of schools, coaches, community volunteers, individual sports people and teams.

Mr McDonald added: “These awards showcase an exciting breadth and depth of talent which is being nurtured by a city-wide commitment to sporting excellence and grassroots involvement.

“To all our nominees and winners, I would like to applaud the ongoing efforts of our city’s army of volunteers, coaches and club members, who continue to deliver a lasting sporting legacy at community level and on the international stage.”
