Pupils at a Milton primary school are set to receive a range of exciting sporting opportunities after winning a competition from Aldi.

Chirnsyde Primary School will receive £20,000 to spend on new equipment and to improve their outdoor facilities.

The funds are provided by Aldi's Kit for School competition, organised alongside Team GB, to encourage kids to become more active ahead of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

The school's principal, Pamela McTaggart, believes the added funds could inspire the children potentially lead to the discovery of "a future Olympian".

She said: “Physical education is a vital part of our curriculum, and Aldi’s support means we can provide our pupils with even more opportunities to get involved in sports and become more active.

"We hope it will inspire the children and, who knows, we may even discover a future Olympian of our own.

"It has also been fantastic to see so many local parents supporting us, and we would like to thank them for choosing to donate their stickers to us.”

Chirnsyde Primary was entered into the prize draw after shoppers collected stickers every time they spent more than £30 in Aldi and gifted them to the school.

The Kit for Schools competition hopes encourages kids to get active and to eat well.

Twenty schools across the UK received £20,000 in funding, with a number of schools also receiving other prizes such as an exclusive sports kit containing bibs, balls, cones, relay batons and more.

Marketing director at Aldi UK Sean McGinty said: "We are committed to working with Team GB to inspire young people in Glasgow to eat well and move more, and we are pleased to be able to help Chirnsyde Primary School to give its pupils the chance to take part in additional sports activities.

"We will continue to work with schools across the UK in the run-up to Tokyo 2020 and beyond to encourage pupils to enjoy a healthy lifestyle.”

Aldi’s Scottish Sport Fund will also return this year with sports clubs invited to apply for a share of £50,000 to help encourage young people engage in a healthy amount of physical activity.
