DRAGONS, dancers and drummers helped Glasgow celebrate Chinese New Year in George Square and the City Chambers.

The Chinese Cultural and Welfare Society put on the show for the fifth year in a row to celebrate the new year of the rat.

The event celebrated the Chinese community’s long standing contribution to Glasgow as a multicultural city.

The show featured a mixture of Chinese and Scottish culture.

The traditional Lion and Dragon dance, started the proceedings with Chinese dancing, martial arts displays, Scottish country dancing and a pipe band.

Lord Provost, Philip Braat, said: “It’s the diverse culture of our citizens that makes Glasgow the wonderful multi-cultural society that so enriches this city we all know and love.”

Andy Chung, President of the Chinese Cultural and Welfare Society, thanked all the organisations who helped with the event and for “helping make Glasgow a multi-cultural city.”

In George Square the Lion and Dragon dance was performed before the afternoon celebration inside the City Chambers before several hundred guests.

Glasgow City Council and NG Homes helped put the show on.

Margaret Fraser, head of regeneration at NG homes said: “The city’s slogan is ‘People make Glasgow’ and its important we celebrate Chinese New Year. It is a time of celebration to enjoy existing friendships and make new friends.”
