A busy South Side commuter area is set to be closed to vehicles and pedestrians for three months as uprgrades to the local electricity network begin. 

SP Energy Networks have announced that the north of Pollokshaws Road, Turriff Street and Devon Street are all planned to be closed to all road users, bikes and pedestrians from Monday 10th February until May.

The company have said that the upgrade works are part of a £20m programme of works which will see major electricity substations in Glasgow's South Side replaced, an investment programme to help support the aim of making the city the UK's first net zero carbon city by 2030.  

Craig Arthur, Distribution Director at SP Energy Networks said: "I’d like to thank the local community for their patience and support while we work to modernise their electricity network.

"This investment will provide long term benefits to support the transition to a low carbon community to help Glasgow become the UK’s first Net Zero City.”

Eglinton Street will remain open, but staged lane closures will take place from March until May.

SP Energy networks have confirmed that there are no planned interruptions to electric supply during the works, and residents and local businesses will still have access to buildings.
