A 12-year-old boy has been charged after a volunteer was assaulted in an East End park.

Police were called to the Mount Vernon Community Hall at Mount Vernon Park following the incident, which took place between 3pm and 5pm on Saturday.

It’s believed a volunteer at the community hall was surrounded by a group of youths – with many claimed to have been “under the influence of drugs or drink”.

The volunteer was then allegedly attacked before the group attempted to break into the building – which is used to stage local group meetings, workshops and parties.

The incident came less than an hour after another reported incident in the same park.

According to local community page Brighter Baillieston, a group of teenagers playing football in the park were threatened by youth thugs with a hammer.

Again, the page claims those responsible were under the influence of drink or drugs – with volunteers at the community hall linking the two incidents.

A post on the Brighter Baillieston page read: “One boy was hit on the face and they ran for their lives.

“They called the police who then chased the boys to the train station.”

Volunteers from Mount Vernon Community Hall says the police have the hammer and are reviewing CCTV footage of the incident.

They also took the opportunity to hit out at youth disorder, after “several anti-social reports over the years”.

They posted: “Violence should never be tolerated.

“Our volunteers give up their free time - often juggling work and family commitments to keep the community hall running and make positive changes within the community without them the Community hall would be closed

“Unfortunately it isn’t an isolated incident there have been several anti-social reports over the years."

They added: “It is important to note that Mount Vernon Community Hall is proud to have over 10 young volunteers from the local community who regularly help at the community hall.

“They are a fantastic asset to the community and welcome others to join us. We don’t believe this incident is a true reflection on all young people just a small minority.”

The group also acknowledged a large number of the youths who, when realised the situation was “becoming out of control”, tried to prevent it escalating further.

They urged anyone with information regarding any anti-social behaviour to contact the police.

A Police Scotland spokesman confirmed to the Glasgow Times: “A 12-year-old male has been arrested and charged in connection with an assault at a premises on Kenmuir Avenue at around 3.20pm yesterday.

“He will be reported to the relevant authorities.”
