A nine-mile stretch of a major motorway has been closed this morning following a crash in treacherous conditions. 

Emergency services attended the scene of an overturned lorry on the M74 this morning, near Uddington.

Traffic has been diverted and the road is closed at Junction 12.

Traffic Scotland has warned of delays and has advised commuters to allow extra time for travelling this morning.

Police Scotland said an ambulance attended "as a precaution"  but it is believed there were no serious injuries. 

Pictures from the scene show the lorry having fully shed its load, which has spread out across all three lanes.

A statement on the Dumfries and Galloway Police Facebook page read: "The A74(M) 1 mile south of Jct 12 on southbound carriageway is currently closed temporarily due to a HGV being recovered after it tipped on its side blocking all 3 lanes.

"Police, Westons recovery and Autolink on site road diversion in place.

"Northbound open drive with extreme care."

The crash comes just a day after another serious incident on the same road amid treacherous driving conditions. 

We told yesterday how a woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries after a crash on the M74 near to Junction 7 at Larkhall at around 9am.

That crash, which involved a lorry and three cars, saw another man also taken to hospital as a precaution.
