However, 12 per cent said that they would value a donation to a women's rights charity over a gift. A futher 12 per cent said they'd like a donation for an animal charity.

A whopping 33 per cent even said they'd like no gift at all!

According to the YouGov poll, people from Glasgow are following actor Emma Watson's lead and re-thinking what it means to be single - with 31 per cent considering themselves 'self-partnered'.

The poll was commissioned by ActionAid as part of their #MyBodyIsMine campaign and questioned traditional social norms.

The #MyBodyIsMine campaign continues to challeneg deep-rooted social norms and celebrates the power and independence of those reclaiming their rights.

Tasha Burgess, women’s rights campaign manager at ActionAid, said: “This Valentine's Day, we are celebrating doing things differently and it's great to see such a range of preferences from UK cities.

"While they challenge social norms in a light-hearted way, they also help emphasise the need for more change.

“In the countries where ActionAid works, social norms routinely hold back women and girls from fulfilling their potential and lead to sexual harassment and other forms of violence.

"We want more women and girls to say #MyBodyIsMine and live their lives without fear of retribution."
