A Scottish Labour candidate has been slapped down by Lewis Capaldi after she criticised him for collecting a Brit award with a bottle of Buckfast in hand.

Leah Franchetti tweeted a picture of the Glasgow-born singer holding a bottle of tonic wine in one hand and his award for Best Song of the Year in the other with the caption "We have an unhealthy relationship with alcohol in Scotland. This doesn’t help." repeated three times.

Capaldi sniped back: "imagine having a drink on my first night off in months after winning two Brit awards, can you believe it?!"

Franchetti, Labour's candidate for Shettleston in the Holyrood elections next year, was criticised by some on Twitter who pointed out that Capaldi was not the only person drinking at the Tuesday night's ceremony.

Some agreed with the Labour candidate, saying that they "cringed" at the stunt.

Capaldi was nominated for four awards at the annual prize-giving in London, winning Best Song and Best New Artist.

He was pipped for Best Male Act and Best Album by two London rappers, Stormzy and Dave, respectively.
