YOUNG people in Glasgow who are being treated for cancer can now access a free scalp-cooling treatment.
The treatment, available to those aged between 13 and 24, comes at no extra cost to the patient, hospital or Trust.
The ground-breaking treatment that stops hair loss during chemotherapy was only available to adults within cancer units, until now.
The Laura Crane Youth Cancer Trust (LCYCT) and scalp-cooling pioneer Paxman have launched a new Teenage Young Adult (TYA) service which allows the UK’s 28 specialist units access to the technology.
However, not all young people receiving chemotherapy will be eligible to use the treatment as it is dependant on what type of cancer they have.
Clinical staff will also be provided with comprehensive training so as they know exactly how to use the Paxman Scalp-Cooling System, which includes cap fitting and efficacy.
Helen Mervill from LCYCT
said: “Young people tell us regularly how devastating it is for them to lose their hair during chemo.
“We have already carried
out a scalp-cooling trial using the Paxman Scalp-Cooling System in young adult units in Sheffield, Liverpool and Leicester, which was extremely successful.”
