A NEW early learning facility for pupils under five could be developed at the former Broomhill Primary School in the North West of Glasgow.

Plans have been drawn up and submitted to the local authority for the site between Crow Road, Woodcroft Avenue and Randolph Road.

As of this year the Scottish Government pledged to increase the provision of free early learning and childcare from 600 hours to 1140 for all 3-5 year olds as well as eligible two year olds.

The aim of the scheme is to improve children’s outcomes and help close the poverty-related attainment gap.

It is also hoped it will increase family resilience through improved health and wellbeing of children and parents and support parents into work, study or training.

To deliver this expansion, Glasgow City Council has declared that it is committed to providing new build early learning and childcare (ELC) facilities in areas where high demand for early years places exceeds existing physical capacity.

A similar application for a site in Govanhill has already been lodged with the council.

The proposals at Broomhill will accommodate up to 87 pre-school children and will include four playrooms, a dinning room, reception and admin offices.

It will also host a parents rooms, staff room, kitchen and laundry room and changing facilities.

The site will operate 52 weeks of the year and will open Monday to Friday between 8am and 6pm.

In order to allow families to use their allocated hours more flexibly, there will be no set sessions.

Pupil drop off and collection will take place throughout the day, with busy periods estimated at the start and end of the day.

Following meetings with road experts, it was agreed that the site is well served by public transport, meaning a car park will not be created with the development.

It is hoped this will encourage the use of public transport and sustainable active travel to work.

The nearest train stations are Jordanhill and Hyndland, which are approximately seven to 10 minutes walking distance from the base.

A drop-off area for parents will be available because of a lack of on-street parking and the potential that some parents and pupils may not be coming from the local area.

The building has been positioned away from the site perimeter to cut down tree loss and to maximise the south facing outdoor play space and every room will have a view of some natural outdoor space.

The main entrance will be off Randolph Road and will feature a garden area.

The former Broomhill Primary Annexe was demolished in December 2019 with the two remaining portacabins being removed as part of this development.

Broomhill was first established between 1888 and 1910, when many of the red sandstone tenements, terraces and churches were built.

Red sandstone and slate roofs are the most predominant external materials used in surrounding buildings as is honey and grey coloured sandstone.

The external material of the ELC building will be selected to complement the area's character.

There are also a number of local amenities along Crow Road, including shops, restaurants cafés and newsagents that are well used by the local community.

A decision on this application will be made in due course.
