STEVEN GERRARD insists he won't go back to the drawing board and revamp his tactical approach this term.

The Ibrox boss has seen his side produce hugely contrasting performances between their domestic challenges and Europa League campaign in recent months.

Rangers set up a last 16 tie with Bayer Leverkusen by seeing off Braga last week.

But that impressive showing in Porto came in between a draw with St Johnstone and defeat to Hearts that ended the Light Blues' silverware ambitions once again.

Many have pointed to Gerrard's formation and the lack of physicality within the Ibrox squad as reasons behind Rangers' struggles in Scotland.

Gerrard said: “There night be an element of truth in certain opinion about that. Maybe we do need a type of player who can help us when the game swings from being possession-based to a more in-your-face style battle.

“But I can’t swing from game to game because after Wednesday night the opinion out there was, ‘Rangers are close, Rangers are flying, Rangers have got some right good players.’ How good was the midfield?

“Yet within three or four days, it’s like every player at Rangers is not good enough, they can’t handle the heat, you need 10 new players.

"That’s life at Rangers. I have to have some balance in amongst those opinions.

“Do we need a few more players of a higher level to support the players we have now? Yeah, One hundred percent.

“I won’t completely tear up the philosophy we’ve been using and start again and go a completely different way.

“Will I adapt? I’d like to adapt and solve problems in a completely different way. One hundred percent.”

Rangers have thrived against the likes of Legia Warsaw, Porto, Feyenoord, Young Boys and Braga in the Europa League as they have improved on last season's solid showing on the continent to reach the latter stages.

But two defeats to Hearts, the loss to Kilmarnock and draws with Aberdeen and St Johnstone have seen their campaign collapse.

“I think we have to embrace that, I don’t have a problem with the contrast of games up here," Gerrard said when asked about the different approach Rangers face here.

“You are talking about competing against teams in Europe that have got miles bigger budgets than the majority of teams in Scotland so it is only natural that they have got a finer player that can play at a more technical level.

“That doesn’t mean that all of a sudden every team in Scotland has got to play the same way or have the same style of play as these teams. We have to accept and embrace that, our challenge is the contrast of games.

“We are going to play against some teams that are possession based and are going to try and outplay us on the floor, but then move on to that challenge win, lose or draw and get ready for a team that maybe are best suited and their best style is to go from back to front quicker and be more direct.

“We can’t pick and choose how teams set up against us or play, we have to embrace it and be excited by it and try and solve the challenges every two or three days.”
