A GLASGOW author is determined to keep kids reading through the coronavirus outbreak.

Angela Proctor, from the city’s east end, has announced she will provide virtual book readings and free digital copies of her teaching packs to help schools, parents and carers cope with possible teacher shortages and children self-isolating during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Angela, who writes the Thumble Tumble adventure books about a little witch living on Arran, is planning live Instagram reading sessions via @ThumbleTumble as long as they are needed during the outbreak.

She is also providing free Thumble Tumble teaching packs, adopted by education departments covering hundreds of schools across Scotland, via her website.

Glasgow Times:

She said: “Future generations of authors, playwrights, poets and songwriters, are born from the inspiration and education we discover in our childhood.

“Indeed, my own successful Thumble Tumble adventure series would never have been possible without the magical experiences I had at school as a child.”

Angela added: “I know that many teachers, parents and carers are currently anxious about ensuring their children and young people access education and motivating educational materials even if they have to self-isolate, or if schools have staff shortages.

“I want to do all that I can to support them in ensuring children continue to experience engaging, exciting and even magical encounters with literature.

“In this digital age we have a fantastic opportunity to do this from home.”

Angela created the packs in partnership with leading educational experts to help improve literacy and ensure that the material meets all the requirements for the Curriculum for Excellence.

Glasgow Times:

Aimed at Primary 4 to 6, the pack explores tools for reading, words and phrases, characterisation, listening activities, creating texts and more.

It also covers a number of experiences and outcomes that are used by schools to plan learning and assess progress.

The Thumble Tumble books have been highly praised by children, teachers, librarians and leading bookstores through Scotland, the UK and beyond.

They feature on Scotland’s new National Storybook Trail, published by VisitScotland, alongside such literary greats as Peter Pan and Wind in the Willows.
