Derek Mackay, the former Finance Secretary, who sent hundreds of private messages on social media to a teenager, will not face criminal charges.

Police enquiries into the case have been completed and the force said there is no basis for criminal charges.

Police Scotland said "There is nothing to suggest that an offence has been committed" but added that anyone with any more information should contact police.

Ms Mackay resigned last month, hours before he was due to deliver the Scottish Budget in Holyrood this year after The Sun newspaper revealed the messages he sent to the 16 year old boy.

Mr Mackay had contacted the teenager, told him he was “cute” and invited him to a rugby match and to dinner.
