Strathbungo has been named as one of Scotland’s top neighbourhoods in a new national study of the best places to live.

The thriving Southside location has experienced a spike in popularity over the last few years thanks to its reasonable property prices, bustling bars and proximity to nearby green space in Queen’s Park.

The area, which along with Shawlands is often touted as the ‘new West End’ was the only Glasgow area to appear on the Sunday Times list.

Edinburgh’s historic port district of Leith topped the rankings, ahead of Cromarty in the Highlands and Dunblane - home of tennis greats Andy and Jamie Murray.

A panel of expert judges assessed a wide range of factors, from schools, transport and broadband speed to culture, green spaces and the health of the high street to produce the guide.

Strathbungo placed seventh on the list, ahead of Melrose in the Scottish Borders, Monavie in Dumfries and Galloway and the picturesque East Lothian town of North Berwick.

Judges praised the comparatively low property sale and rental costs in the neighbourhood, with average house prices of £139,000 behind only fourth-placed Dundee and Monavie.

Sunday Times home editor Helen Davies said: ““Never has where you live felt more important. This year we have, along with house prices, air quality, good schools and access to green spaces, championed locations that have showcased great community spirit.

“The feeling of involvement in and concern for one's local community is being challenged — and celebrated — as never before. We wish everyone well wherever they live."
