An urgent appeal has been launched to trace the grandson of Celtic legend Billy McNeill, who has been missing in Amsterdam for almost a week.

Matthew McCombe has not been seen since vanishing from his hotel in the Dutch capital at around 6.15am on March 14. 

He was there to celebrate his 21st birthday.

CCTV captured Matthew leaving his hotel before being later spotted at Amsteldijk at 6.44am, wearing a light grey or white Northern Rock jumper.

His family have issued online appeals to try and trace him.

Matthew's mum has been in Amsterdam since Wednesday and her husband since Sunday.

She wrote online: “Police are calling on all companies including bars, restaurants and hotels to bring in CCTV from the past weekend.

“We are desperate. Police did a lot for us, but because of the coronavirus they are understaffed.”

Celtic Football Club have also urged people to keep a look out for the 21-year-old.

They posted on Twitter: "Celtic Great, Billy McNeill's Grandson, Matthew McCombe, 21, is currently missing in Amsterdam.

"He has short dark blonde hair and a slim build. Have you seen Matthew? Please share this, it may reach someone who has.

"He was last seen on the 14th March between 6:40am and 7:30am in the vicinity of the Amstel train station, and was wearing a light blue stone island jumper, blue jeans and blue shoes."

Footballing legend Sir Kenny Dalglish has also urged his 880,000 Twitter followers to help in the search. 

Sharing a Dutch article, he said: “Celtic legend Billy McNeill’s 21 year old grandson, Matthew, went missing on Saturday in Amsterdam.

“If anyone is able to help his family to find him, it would be very much appreciated by all.

“The McNeill family has been close to Marine and I for many years.”

Liverpool stars Virgil Van Dijk and Andy Robertson also shared an appeal on Instagram to their combined 11million following. 

Billy McNeill captained Celtic's Lisbon lions team to victory in the 1967 European Cup.

He sadly passed away in April last year, aged 79.
