MCDONALD'S can open a new drive-through restaurant and children's play area on the car park of Toryglen's Asda.

Glasgow City Council has given the green light to the fast food chain's application for a two-storey restaurant on Prospecthill Road.

Concerns about the development have previously been raised by local residents who fear the impact it will have on children’s health and traffic.

A planning report states: "The proposal is to erect restaurant with drive through facility which would form a ‘McDonalds corporate style’ restaurant to the easternmost portion of the Asda car park.

"The drive through restaurant would have 32 dedicated parking spaces, and is proposed to operate on a 24-hour opening, alongside the existing Asda superstore."

Permission for a McDonald’s restaurant on the supermarket site was previously granted in February 2017. The new proposals move the restaurant to the back of the site.

The report continues: "This proposal has arisen because Asda, as operator of the site has identified the car park is underutilised and could therefore, in part, be developed, as per the proposed restaurant."

A transport study added: "Car park occupancy statistics reveal that the store car park is underutilised, with a substantial number of spaces not used.

"As part of an exercise to rationale its estate, Asda has identified the opportunity to incorporate some additional development at the Toryglen store, reducing the number of surplus car parking spaces and increasing the efficiency of the site."

When McDonald's submitted the application, a spokeswoman said at least 65 jobs would be created.
