A SQUAD of footballers and their families are helping East End communities in need during the coronavirus outbreak.

Shettleston Juniors Football Club and the Kids Academy have volunteered to deliver daily lunch meals to around 70 pensioners in the area - after lockdown meant they couldn't attend their pensioner's club at the ground.

Owner Hugh Kelly donated money to start off the initiative with families also helping with fundraising through a page.

Chef Willie McCauley cooks up classics such as mince and tatties which are delivered to pensioners in Tollcross, Parkhead Carmyle, Shettleston, Cranhill and Ruchazie.

While the volunteers deliver with social distancing measures in place of course.

The project has been such a success, it has been extended to 10 struggling families in the area who receive bags of food. Morrisons in Baillieston has helped with donations for the families.

One volunteer Diane Cunningham, whose son attends the club, said: "They miss their pensioner's club and they say it is really nice that the owner is taking care of them."

A GoFundMe has been set up to support the project.
