A SOUTH Side zero-waste shop has announced plans to launch a new hand sanitiser, made from turnips.

Locavore, on Victoria Road, said they had secured funding to move forward with the unusual project, which will supply locals with antibacterial hand gel during the COVID-19 lockdown.

The store said: "We're teaming up with an East Renfrewshire farmer and Glasgow distillery to develop and bottle a high alcohol turnip 'vodka' which we will initially make into hand sanitiser."

Plans will see the vegetable alcohol first used to produce a hand gel, with plans to sell the 'turnip vodka' as a drink later in the year.

The turnip hand gel will be available in the Locavore store and via their online shop by the end of April.
