PEOPLE are putting Glasgow’s refuse workers and the public at coronavirus risk by dumping used disposable gloves on streets.

Several pictures have emerged of gloves dumped on pavements around the West End of the city.

A Glasgow City Council source described the littering as “disgusting behaviour.”

The NHS says items like face masks and gloves play a “very important role” in a clinical setting but there is “little widespread evidence” that they are useful for members of the public. However, their use has been more widespread in European countries and in the U.S.

One woman, who lives in North Kelvinside, said: “It great that people are taking the initiative to wear gloves but walking home from the Lidl in St George’s cross the amount of gloves thrown on the ground is ridiculous and defeats the purpose of infection control.

“In fact it’s so irresponsible and puts others at risk you know the council men who actually need to pick your debris up! Not the glove fairy!

“Use them and bin them! Remove them properly and follow your hand wash procedure! Simple!”

A spokeswoman for Glasgow City Council said there had been no official complaints but added: “"This is totally irresponsible. We are doing everything we can to ensure the safety of staff as they go about their work, however this sort of selfish behaviour does not help anyone.”
