TESTING for Covid-19 should be made widely available allowing key workers to self-isolate or return to work according to Glaswegians.

A graph, circulating online, shows that the number of Coronavirus deaths in the UK, Spain and Italy has been increasing at a much faster rate than they did in China.

China began its lockdown after just 30 deaths while South Korea’s early and large scale testing approach helped authorities control the outbreak.

Glasgow residents have been raising concerns about the UK’s approach to the crisis and believe that testing should be available to everyone but particularly to those on the frontline.

Three-quarters of people living in the city believe the government left it too late to take strict measures against Coronavirus .

Southside councillor Soryia Siddique agreed that more testing would get the virus under control.

She said: “We should learn from the impact of South Korea’s testing curve. We should be testing, testing, testing.

“Universities in the UK have the capability to do this so let’s adapt. Widely available testing would allow key workers to make accurate decisions about the need to self-isolate or return to work.”

James Bark said: “More steps should have been taken to begin with. It doesn’t need to be full testing - even taking someone’s temperature before entering a public place like a supermarket.

“If your temperature is 37.5+ you don't get in and if it's 38+ you get taken to a doctor. If we had done things like that sooner, less people would be infected.”

Annie Paterson added: “Hospital staff have been following a protocol of only testing people they admit.

“To be honest I think it’s an approach driven by the practicality of not having enough testing kits, money and keeping levels of confirmed cases lower than they actually are.

“Didn’t the World Health Organisation say the whole approach is test test test so you can trace contacts of everyone infected and isolate them - but you need to do that from beginning and be strict about it.

“There has been a lot of alarm at the government’s early strategy of implying “herd immunity’ would help rather than aggressively pursuing cases and trying to stamp this thing out.”
