A POPULAR hotel has partnered with a city restaurant to feed staff at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary during the coronavirus crisis.

Laura and Shane McKenzie, owners of Glasgow's Cathedral House Hotel in Glasgow, have enlisted help from Red Onion chef and owner, John Quigley, and his daughter, Rosie, to feed 100 staff every night from the Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

Laura said: "We were forced to close at the start of the lockdown along with government guidelines and in the days proceeding lost all our bookings.

Glasgow Times:

"We wanted to help do our bit, so decided to start 'Suppers for Superheroes' where we are cooking and delivering one hundred meals to staff at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary."

The family-ran hotel has been operating for over thirty years, and volunteers for the initiative are all family members.

Rosie Quigley was forced to return from her studies at Birmingham University due to the coronavirus lockdown. Laura and Shane's children Anna, Callum and Emily are all also helping with the project, and Emily has just qualified as a junior doctor - making the efforts of the NHS closer to home.

Shane said: "We are making 100 meals per night for five nights a week. They are for staff workers who don't have the time to go out and shop or cook, so at least they can now have a war and nutritious meal before or after their shift. The staff are chuffed."

Supper for Superheroes is funded by Celtic FC Charitable Foundation, and the Glasgow Cathedral House Hotel has been involved in the regeneration project of the Glasgow High Street.

Laura added: "We are lucky because the hotel has always been a lovely hub for people in the surrounding area but this has made the community spirit obvious.

"We really think this has added strength to the community."

John Quigley from Red Onion said it brought him and Rosie together.

John said: "I think nothing will go back to normal until there is a vaccine. I jumped at the chance to get back in my whites and rattle some pots and pans.

"Rosie is secretly enjoying it. It's good to have this time."
