Co-founder of For the Love of Scrubs have said that pleas for the protective clothing have been “desperate” as the group has dispatched over 1000 sets to hospitals across the city.

For the Love of Scrubs was launched last month on Facebook after founders identified a shortage in the supply of medical gowns to frontline health workers.

Since its launch, the group has provided a platform to connect communities and individuals across Scotland who can contribute in making and supplying sets to local hospitals and other frontline health workers.

Maja Jankowska said: “The emails that we have been receiving are quite desperate. There has been people saying that they need to wear binbags over their clothes to protect themselves, so it isn’t an ideal situation.

“In Glasgow, we have had a total of 1980 requests for the scrubs. We’ve currently got 556 in production that will be ready for Monday.”

So far, the group has distributed sets to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, the Royal Infirmary, Leverndale Hospital and GP surgeries across the city.

Maja added: “We’ve also been referring those who have made requests to us on to other organisations and advising them to contact the government’s new point of contact for medical workers if they are concerned over a lack of PPE.

“We’re just trying our best to help them out.”

Since the group launched, they have distributed 8000 scrubs across Scotland and have raised a total of £34,000 to fund materials.

Maja added: “As long as there is money for us to buy fabrics we can continue. The £34,000 we have raised is amazing but it won’t cover even half of the amount that has been requested.

“It will keep going as long as there is money for us to keep going.

“There has been individuals and communities that have been really generous. It’s very much a community effort and we are really grateful.”

“We’ve had so many people help us. Kilmarnock prison has also been making scrubs for us.

“It isn’t just people in their houses helping. The prisoners used to sow as a job but now the work has been suspended due to coronavirus.

“They’ve offered their time to volunteer and make scrubs which is just incredible, seeing literally everyone come together.”

The group has been connecting tailors in different communities to a designated collector who delivers the scrubs to their local hospital in an effort to minimise contact.
