POTENTIALLY life-saving prescription drugs have been stolen from a storage unit - with police fearing 'fatal' consequences by those taking them.

Officers have issued a warning to the public across the west of Scotland who may be offered the pills - which include a quantity of Diazepam tablets, bottles of Morphine, Pregablin tablets and Nitrazpam tablets.

They were allegedly taken from a storage unit in Kilmarnock on Saturday.

Police say a 40-year-old man has since been arrested and charged in connection with the alleged theft.

He has been released on an undertaking to appear at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court at a later date, with a full report being sent to the Procurator Fiscal.

Detective Inspector Nathan Calderwood of Kilmarnock Police Station said: “The drugs stolen could have potentially serious or fatal consequences if they are taken by anyone for whom they are not prescribed.

“We have been carrying out enquiries in the Ayrshire area to trace the stolen items and I would urge anyone who comes across any discarded medication to hand it into their local police office.

“I would also ask anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the stolen medication to contact Kilmarnock Police Office through 101 quoting reference number 0930 of the 18th April.”
