A GLASGOW food charity is on track to distribute one million meals to organisations across the city helping vulnerable families through the Coronavirus crisis.
FareShare Glasgow, which is run by Move On, have been continuing to fight hunger and food waste during the Coronavirus crisis by redistributing food to charities, schools and housing associations.
Organisations then deliver home cooked meals to those in need and aim to have delivered all the meals by the end of next week.
FareShare, the UK’s longest running food redistribution charitable foundation who were born out of the belief that no good food should go to waste, especially when people are going hungry, has also recently increased the number of charities and community groups in its network across Glasgow.
The charity deliver to anyone who would normally help feed hungry mouths including school breakfast clubs, women’s refuse centres, mental health organisations and community centres. Home cooked meals are then delivered to people’s front doors who are in isolation, experiencing food poverty or financial difficulty.

Charlene Best, marketing and communications officer, said: “We're increasing the volume of food we're distributing week on week. For example, from April 13 -17, we distributed 55 tonnes, equivalent to 130,955 meals. Then from April 20 - 24, we distributed 75 tonnes, equivalent to 178,575 meals.
“Last week we hit our biggest amount ever, with 88 tonnes, equivalent to 209,528 meals, distributed.
“This represents close to a threefold increase in demand, with 315 tonnes, equivalent to 750,015 meals, distributed so far since lockdown started, compared to 112 tonnes, equivalent to 266,672 meals, in the same period last year.

“We distributed another 200,000 meals last week, so, at the current rate, we're on track to distribute 1,000,000 meals during lockdown by the end of next week.”
