The Lord Provost said this generation is facing its own “greatest challenge” as he recorded a video message to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day.
Philip Braat, said: “As we mark the 75th Anniversary of Victory in Europe Day in a way we could never have imagined because of the pandemic, today remains a day to reflect and remember a generation that sacrificed for the greater good and to whom we owe so much.
“A sacrifice that must never be forgotten.
“Just as the Second World War was that generation’s greatest challenge, likewise, the current pandemic is our generation’s biggest challenge.
“We, too, owe so much to this generation of men and women on the frontline in all sectors, who are working so hard to keep us safe and in some unfortunate cases making the ultimate sacrifice.
“However, I am convinced that with the same community-spirit and solidarity as shown by our ancestors 75 years ago, we also shall overcome.”
Events planned to celebrate VE Day have been cancelled and on line and televised events will take place instead.
At 8am today the Union flag is to be raised above the City Chambers.
At 10.40am there is a Legion Scotland Online Remembrance Service with 2 minutes’ silence at 11am, livestreamed on the Legion Scotland and Poppyscotland Facebook pages.
