GLASGOW'S top cop has called for locals to stick by coronavirus lockdown rules this weekend.

Chief Superintendent Hazel Hendren has praised the majority of the public for following measures to reduce the spread of Covid-19 in a bid to protect the NHS and save lives.

Social distancing rules include limiting time spent outdoors and keeping 2m apart from others.

The Chief Supt echoed Police Scotland Chief Constable Iain Livingstone's earlier comments during the Scottish Government's daily briefing, in which he thanked Scots for their "high levels of cooperation and consent".

And with police patrolling Glasgow's streets 24 hours a day, Chief Supt Hendren emphasised they will only use enforcement as a 'last resort' amid increased reports of people flaunting lockdown rules.

She said: “I am grateful for the high levels of support from the majority of the public who are complying with the Scottish Government guidance.

"As the Chief Constable said today, we need everybody to continue to play their part to protect the NHS and save lives.

"Our day-to-day work continues as well and it is important that people continue to come forward to report crimes or concerns they might have about someone who could be at risk of harm."
