A JUDGE today at the High Court in Glasgow paid tribute to top QC Derek Ogg who died at home earlier this month.

Lord Matthews said: “It has been some time since I've been in court. I wish to express the sadness of the whole court about the untimely death of Derek Ogg, He was an adornment to the Bar and I'm very sorry we won't be seeing him here again.”

It is understood that Mr Ogg's funeral is being held on Friday.

He was a solicitor in private practice for several years before becoming a member of the Faculty of Advocates in 1989 and taking Silk in 1999.

He was in involved in high profile cases both as a prosecutor and as a defence QC.

Derek successfully prosecuted murderer Malcolm Webster who was convicted of murdering his first wife in Aberdeen and attempting to murder his second wife in New Zealand.

He also successfully defended Ross Monaghan who was acquitted of murdering Kevin “Gerbil “ Carroll by shooting him at a supermarket in Robroyston, Glasgow.

During his time with Crown Office Derek became the first head of the National Sexual Crimes Unit.

In 2015, he was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Equality Network’s inaugural Scottish Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) Awards.
