A TOOTHLESS man armed with a lockback knife who claimed the blade was to cut food was jailed today for 12 months.

Lukasz Filipiak, 31, was snared with the weapon at a Poundland store in Glasgow’s Argyle Street in February this year.

Filipiak was found at the store after 8.30pm when officers had reason to search him.

Glasgow Sheriff Court was told the Polish national confessed to having the knife in his shoulder bag.

Prosecutor Mark Allan said: “The accused was handcuffed and he was searched.

“The black handled lockback with a spider web pattern on the handle was found clipped to the rear of his shoulder bag.

“The blade was less than three inches and the knife was seized.”

Filipiak was arrested and held in custody before pleading guilty today to the unlawful possession of a knife in a public place.

A not guilty plea to stealing a quantity of clothing at the Poundland was accepted by the Crown.

Lawyer, Harvie Diamond, defending, told the court Filipiak claimed used the blade to “cut food.”

He said: “Mr Filipiak showed me that he only has six teeth left and can’t cut anything with his teeth so uses the knife to do that.

“I’m not sure he understood the law in terms of the knife and indicated he didn’t think he did anything wrong.”

Sheriff Ian Fleming told Filipiak: “Your last previous conviction involved a knife and this circumstance I have no option but to impose a custodial sentence.”
