A man who attacked his girlfriend just hours after his mother’s funeral was jailed today for 13 months.

Iain Hampson yanked his victim by the hair and knocked her to the ground at her flat in Glasgow’s Broomhill last November.

When police turned up, the 21-year-old had a knife on him.

Hampson was charged and bailed with an order not to go near his partner.

Hampson, who has a previous conviction for assault, was also on licence at the time following an earlier robbery conviction.

But, he struck again after a “chance meeting” with the 21-year-old at a shopping centre near her home.

Prosecutor Mark Allan said: “Witnesses saw Hampson seize hold of her arms and push her. He then struck her on the head.”

The dad-of-one fled, but was traced via CCTV.

Hampson pleaded guilty to the two assaults, breaching bail and possession of the knife.

Sheriff Ian Miller told Hampson during sentencing that the funeral was “not a mitigating factor but a background factor.”

Ian Sievwright, defending, said: “His mother died on November 12 after a difficult battle with cancer and a brain aneurism.

“This was having an effect on him - the funeral was the day before the offence.”
