CUNNING car thieves have been targeting cars in the West End of Glasgow.

Police Scotland confirmed that they have been receiving reports of people trying to open residents' car doors - normally in the early hours of the morning.

The force are now urging people in the area to remain vigilant.

Official police advice urges car owners to lock all items out of sight once parking up your car.

It recommends motorists not to leave anything on display inside of the vehicle and to take valuables with you as you leave.

To prevent an attempted break in, they say you should leave your glove box empty and also open.

If you own a dash cam or Sat Nav (navigation system), you should hide the cradle and take the system with you.

The force also advice all vehicle owners to take personal correspondence you may have in your vehicle with you as you park up - this will prevent thieves obtaining access to personal, important information or your home address.

To prevent car theft, they recommend to make use of an electronic or mechanical immobiliser such as a steering lock.

Official advice recommends vehicle owners not to park in isolated areas.

Instead, if it is possible, they advise you to park your car in a busy, well-lit and CCTV covered area to minimise the risk of theft or break-in.

If you have an alarm then make sure it’s set.

The city's North West Police Division confirmed that they have made one arrest in the area in connection to this type of crime.

A statement reads: "Police in Glasgow West End continue to receive reports of people trying the car doors, normally in the early hours of the morning.

"We have made one recent arrest in relation to this but we need you to remain vigilant and report this to police right away if you see it."

Anyone with information around a theft, break-in or attempted break in the area should report to Police Scotland by calling 101.

Alternatively, please call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where information can be given anonymously.
