Activists are planning an online rally against returning to work before workplace safety can be guaranteed.

The 'No return to unsafe workplaces rally' will be hosted by Glasgow and Edinburgh-based Covid-19 action groups People before profit.

It will be streamed at 6pm on Tuesday through a Facebook live stream with the purpose of backing the Scottish Trades Union Congress' (STUC) 'five red lines'.

The event will be joined by politicians, trade unionists and frontline workers including Glasgow South West MP Chris Stephens, STUC general secretary-designate Roz Foyer and Lothian MSP Neil Findlay.

A Facebook event page for the rally reads: "Join this meeting with Scottish politicians, trade unionists and frontline workers discussing how we can resist a return to unsafe workplaces and schools.

"Boris Johnson's decision to end the lockdown and send people back to work will cost more lives.

"Our safety should be worth more than their profits. Now is not the time to be taking unnecessary risks."

Scotland is expected to enter Phase 1 of easing lockdown restrictions this Thursday provided the R number or rate of infection remains below 1 and the number of infectious cases declines.

However, working from home will remain the default position for jobs where possible.

The government is advising employers to implement staggered start times and flexible working and to assure the possibility for social distancing.

The STUC set out the 'five red lines' as guiding principles which must be met before workplaces can reopen and they are listed as follows: The capacity for greater testing and contact tracing, the capacity to supply PPE to non-essential workers, sectorial guidance agreed between unions and employers, effective enforcement measures in place, and a continued job retention scheme and support for those who cannot work.

The event page continues: "Easing the lockdown will expose workers and children to unsafe conditions.

"It increases the possibility of a second spike in infections and endangers educators, children, workers and our NHS.

"The STUC also rightly pledges support for any workers who collectively refuse to return to work because of legitimate safety fears."

The rally will be streamed from the People Before Profit: Health Worker Covid Activists Facebook page.
