SINGERS have produced a heart-warming video to raise funds for the refurbishment of a Dalmuir community group refurb – and to let members know the club has not forgotten about them during lockdown.

Golden Friendships, which supports hundreds of elderly and disabled people, usually offers activities, fun nights and general assistance, but lockdown has restricted its ability to bring members together for socialising.

The charity wanted to let members know the workers are still available for support, so founder Jim McLaren arranged for local performers to attend the club one at a time to record the music video.

The group of around 20 sing Michael Jackson’s We Are The World.

Karl Byrne, who features in the clip, has told the Post of the hard work and continuous effort by Jim to support members.

Karl said the video was supposed to be a small scale production but added: “It grew arms and legs and turned into a beautiful video which will let members know we are thinking of them and hopefully raise some funds for the refurb and to support members.”

The Post previously reported on Jim’s efforts to deliver lunches to many members who are in isolation, and Karl said he now believes Jim and his volunteers are delivering around 400 lunches every day.

Karl added: “Jim and the team have received food donations and been supported by a number of vendors to produce the lunches.

“They go out and collect all the donations and then prepare lunches in the mornings to distribute throughout the day.

“I think Jim’s efforts to support others is truly amazing, he is a living saint and he deserves tremendous acknowledgement along with his team.”

Any funds raised through the charity’s JustGiving page will go towards installing four wheelchair cubicles and additional accessible toilets as well as a new heating system and equipment for fire and safety regulations required to open the new hub when the lockdown is lifted.

The video has been shared on Facebook more than 400 times with 300 likes and hundreds of comments thanking Jim and the performers for their efforts. Anyone wishing to donate can do so at localgiving.org/fundraising/singingforgoldenfriendshipsrefurb/.
