A MAN on a tag armed with a knife who turned himself in after chasing youths was jailed today for eight months.

Hafer Khalique, 41, ran outside his property in Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire in April this year.

His actions breached the bail conditions imposed 16 days before the incident which stated he must stay indoors between 7pm and 7am.

He pleaded guilty today at Glasgow Sheriff Court to the unlawful possession of a knife in a public place and the bail breach.

The court heard Khalique called the police at 10.10pm as “unknown males in their teens to early 20s” were at his door.

Prosecutor Mark Allan said: “He made another call into the early hours of the morning.

“This time staying he had chased the men down the street with a knife.”

Officers spoke to an “agitated” Khalique later that morning where he repeated his admissions.

CCTV was examined which backed up Khalique’s claim that he was outside his home with the blade and he was arrested.

He replied: “I was just protecting my property.”

Lawyer Liam Robertson, defending, said: It was an unusual set of circumstances in unusual times.

Mr Robertson added: “He chose to involve the police and tightened his own noose.

“He said people were kicking his door door down and described it as instinct.”

Sheriff Ian Fleming told Khalique that he “needed to deal with this with a custodial sentence.”
