WITHDRAWALS from cash machines across Inverclyde have dropped by 52.5 per cent - with the local economy missing out on a potential £11.2m.
According to industry insiders, the decline is down to coronavirus and the fact ATM machines have become pay-to-use.
MP Ronnie Cowan says he's joined a cross-party group of 37 urging the government to protect access to cash.
He said: "In Inverclyde, around 12 ATMs have become pay to access and people are being charged up to £2 per transaction to access their own money.
"Cash is a lifeline for millions and a vital budgeting tool.
"The COVID-19 pandemic has brought this into stark realisation as many people need others to food shop on their behalf."
