PROTESTERS drove through Glasgow streets to commemorate the death of a man who died in police custody in America.

Several cars were seen driving through Glasgow, sounding their horns while passengers held up photographs of George Floyd, who died after a police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes.

A police car followed protesters' cars on Dobbie's Loan in Cowcaddens at around 5.50pm and cars were later seen driving past the Sheddens Inn on Shettleston road at around 4.45pm but were not accompanied by police.

Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has been arrested and charged in connection with the death but the incident has sparked protests across America and in other countries.

In London yesterday, protesters stood outside the US Embassy to express outrage over Floyd's death at the hands of a Minnesota police officer.

Campaigners have organised a Black Lives Matter protest in Glasgow for Sunday, June 7.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "We are aware of small groups taking part in four separate low-key demonstrations in Glasgow on Sunday 31st May.

"These events passed without incident."
