PAESANO will recycle takeaway boxes after pictures emerged of their packaging blighting a city park.

The beloved Glasgow pizza chain said it was "heartbroken" by a photograph showing a pile of Paesano pizza boxes piled up beside an overflowing bin in a park.

On its Facebook story, the West End and city centre pizzeria urged customers to return their pizza boxes to the restaurant to be recycled if they could not do so themselves.

They urged customers to "exercise your social responsibility" while enjoying a pizza in the sun during the recent heatwave.

In another post, the restaurant said: "We know you’ve all been enjoying a Paesano in the Park.

"Our pizza boxes are made from recycled cardboard and your Paesano experience isn't complete until you've put your pizza boxes in the bin! Remember Paesans, we want our pizza to be famous for the right reasons!"

Keila Meginnis took to Twitter to highlight the problem of litter in the park and said the government and businesses must be prepared to work together to tackle the issue.

She said Glasgow is a "beautiful city" but wondered if the pandemic was making us less environmentally conscious.

She added: "Sure, Glasgow City Council need to work on their waste management. But further along the path, they put a huge skip in the park, to account for the extra waste from more people out enjoying the sun. While not pretty- I appreciate this step to contain and manage the influx in waste.

"Read the govt's 'Zero Waste Scotland Strategy' --so much more the govt pledged to do. 'Intervention 5: Product design....provide a focus for business interests to redesign products and packaging to reduce littering or reduce its impact'. How are you holding Paesano accountable?"

Glasgow city council responded to her posts saying: "Hi Keila, Sorry to see this Our team are aware of this issue and are working very hard to keep parks clean. Kelvingrove has the capacity to take 40,000 litres of waste. If bins are full, we encourage people to take their waste home rather than leave this mess."
