A THUG who attacked his ex-lover and then threatened to kill her while on bail has been jailed for 20 months.

James Nugent shoved the woman and put a knife to her throat last November in Robroyston.

Enraged Nugent believed the woman had let “strangers” into the house.

The 38-year-old was arrested, but, after being freed by a sheriff, he showed up at her home.

Nugent screamed: “It doesn’t matter how long it takes, I’m going to get fit and I’m going to kill you.”

Nugent pleaded guilty on Thursday at Glasgow Sheriff Court to the assault on the woman and acting in a threatening or abusive manner. He also admitted damaging property and breaching bail.

Sheriff Paul Crozier said: “These charges are extremely serious and I’m satisfied a custodial sentence should be imposed.”

He also hit Nugent with a two-year non harassment order against the woman.

An earlier hearing was told the pair separated after a nine years on-off relationship.

The court heard a raging Nugent walked into the house uninvited. He hurled a bowl of soup at the wall and searched the kitchen cupboards.

Nugent said: “Someone has been in here, you’re having strangers in my house.”

He continued to shout and swear and pushed the woman on the shoulders.

Prosecutor Mark Allan added: “Nugent produced a kitchen knife from his pocket and put the knife towards (the woman) and said ‘I will go for your throat’.”

The woman ran from the house and flagged down an ambulance who contacted the police.

Officers later arrived to find the knife in the TV.

Nugget was initially bailed and ordered not to contact the woman or visit her home.

But, 11 days later he turned up there.

Nugent was arrested again and as he made the kill threat as being hauled to a police van.

Scott McQuire, defending, told the court Nugent’s conduct was “reprehensible.”
