Yoker and Knightswood home carers, who have been working on the frontline during the coronavirus pandemic, were joined by clients’ families and neighbours for a memorable final night of Clap for Carers.

The group gathered in Wyvis Court at 8pm last Thursday and shared goodie-bags for children in the street who had made artwork handmade gifts for the carers.

Sharon McGinley, one of the NHS workers, said parents thanked them for bringing a smile to their children’s faces and creating memories of dancing, laughing and “get excited for the countdown” on a Thursday night.

She told the Post: “People make Glasgow and we have tried to bring some community cheer by dancing, singing and clapping on the street of Wyvis in Yoker.

“What started off a small group of us having a laugh and a sing along at the end of our shifts has become a real community effort over the past weeks.

“To see the cheer on people’s faces in this horrible time is amazing and really touching.

“We are honoured to look after the most vulnerable people within our community – Covid sure won’t stand in our way.”

Over the past few weeks, people have made keyrings and hand stitched dollies for the group.

Others made cakes, chocolate dipped strawberries and children designed cards with special thank you messages.

On the final official Clap for Carers, the women danced on the street to the Cha Cha Slide and performed the well-known party dance the Slosh.

Tens of neighbours came out to join in, maintaining a two metre distance. The carers showed their appreciation for the community’s support by giving out bags of sweets, juice and tins of biscuits.

Sharon added: “What was a little bit of fun has turned into a brilliant event we all look forward to and helps to distract ourselves and others from the coronavirus a bit.

“We are here to keep people healthy and safe, it’s our job and we all love what we do.

“For some of the people we care for, and their neighbours, they don’t get out at all now so watching us from the window has been entertainment for them and helped them through this time.

“The past few weeks have been a blast for me and the team, but we really can’t wait until lockdown is over.”
