TRIBUTES have flooded in for a much-loved headteacher who worked in an East End school for nearly three decades.

Jim Dalziel was headteacher at Eastbank Academy in Shettleston for almost 28 years, before retiring 10 years ago.

He was the longest serving headteacher in the school’s 126-year history.

The much-loved father and husband passed away peacefully on June 14.

Maureen McKenna, executive director for Education, Glasgow City Council, said: “Jim was a much loved, admired and respected headteacher in Glasgow for many years and he will be remembered fondly by his many former Eastbank pupils.

“Jim has fought a courageous and dignified battle with illness in the last few years of his retirement and is adored by his family.

“His daughter Jane followed in his footsteps as a headteacher in the city and his skills and dedication to learning and teaching will carry on in his memory.

“Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with the family at this very sad time.”

Paying tribute to Jim on social media, staff from Eastbank wrote: “Very sad to hear of the passing of our former headteacher.

“Mr Dalziel is the longest serving head in the school’s 126 year history and made a huge impact on the school community. We remember his service and our thoughts are with his family.”

Mr Dalziel began his teaching career at Gallowflat Junior Secondary in Rutherglen where he taught English and social subjects, before moving on to Claremont High in East Kilbride.

But it was on becoming principal teacher of modern studies at Riverside Secondary that he discovered his love for the East End of Glasgow.

Glasgow Times:

Mr Dalziel took up the position of headteacher at Eastbank Academy on October 8, 1984, just before the school moved to a new campus.

Daughter Jane Arthur said he "loved his job and the Shettleston community".

Condolences have also poured in from former pupils and locals for the fondly remembered headteacher.

A family-only service will be held on Wednesday, June 24, at 2pm.

Friends, family and those who knew Jim will be able to pay their respects as the funeral procession travels from the family home on Burnhead Road, Newlands, to Linn Crematorium, via Langside Drive, Merrylee Road, Clarkston Road, Old Castle Road, Menock Road, past Cathcart Cemetery and Carmunock Road.
