A MAN snared with a knife who claimed it was to help smoke cannabis was jailed yesterday for 12 months.

Sean Keir, 31, was found with the blade in Cambuslang in March this year.

It was later claimed he was using the knife in order to smoke cannabis from a plastic bottle.

Keir pled guilty yesterday at Glasgow Sheriff Court to the unlawful possession of a knife in a public place.

The court heard officers were in the area for an unrelated matter when they spotted Keir in the close near his mother’s front door.

Keir was subject to a live warrant for his arrest and he lifted his top to tell officers about the knife.

Prosecutor Graham MacDonald said the eight-inch blade was in his waistband and he was arrested.

Keir replied: “I had it on me in the nicest possible way.”

Ross Yuill, defending, told the court that Keir had initially planned to smoke cannabis that day.

He said: “He intended to inhale the cannabis through a plastic bottle.

“The item in question was to be used to cut the bottle for the cannabis to be smoked through it.

“He said the nicest possible way remark in that he means he was going to smoke cannabis.”

Sheriff Johanna Johnston QC jailed Keir due to his “bad record.”
