The construction site for a super-sized hotel in the City Centre has reopened today with promises the hotel will open this financial year.

Work on the 249-bedroom Premier Inn hotel, set to be built in St Enoch's Square, will restart with additional protection measures designed to limit the spread of Covid-19.

Construction has been allowed a gradual return as long as appropriate measures are in place to ensure physical distancing is maintained.

Owner of the Premier Inn, Whitbread, restarted building work on four major hotels across Scotland which are all expected to be ready to welcome guests this financial year.

Alex Flach, UK development director at the hospitality company, said: "The challenges currently facing the hospitality industry has not blunted our ambition to continue to grow the Premier Inn brand in Scotland.

"We have been investing heavily in Scotland for years and these latest hotels continue our strategy of expanding Premier Inn in prime city-centre locations, investing in regeneration schemes in well-connected towns and growing our network in popular tourist locations where we do not have a presence.”

Upon completion, the St Enoch hotel will boast a Whitbread’s Bar + Block Steakhouse restaurant concept.

However, the construction site will not return to pre-coronavirus conditions quite yet, with fewer workers allowed on-site.

The development director said: "Before re-opening our sites in Scotland, we have been working closely with our development and construction partners to ensure we can continue to invest and deliver our new hotels whilst meeting the latest industry guidance on social distancing.

"The sites look different, with fewer workers on-site at any one time, but we’re pleased to be back and progressing with the builds under the new working arrangements.”
