Around 800 jobs at Scottish airports are under threat after Swissport reportedly announced huge cuts across the airline.

The air provider, which has a base in Glasgow, allegedly told staff on Wednesday that up to 4556 jobs could be cut across its board.

Although full details are yet to be released, GMB Union have estimated 320 jobs could be lost at Glasgow Airport.

GMB Scotland Organiser, Bob Deavy said: “Over the last few days we’ve seen grim headlines about the state of the economy and now the industrial dominoes are beginning to fall, with dire consequences for real jobs and livelihoods.

“We warned in March about the need for an intervention across our stricken aviation sector but the political response has been lacklustre at best.

"Consistent warnings about the crisis and the knock-on effect on airport jobs have been ignored by both UK and Scottish Governments.

“Instead our political leaders are looking to old captains of industry to provide solutions, some of whom have been the architects of the underlying weaknesses that already existed in our economy. That’s a tired and predictable response that suggests nothing else but “business as usual”.

“We need a better way and GMB will be inviting Scottish and UK ministers to meet with our members employed in aviation to explain why they have decided that airport jobs are collateral damage, rather than a strategic asset that should be protected with a proper plan to save jobs.

“We need decisive action and we need it now because a failure to grasp the scale of the challenge facing aviation will be disastrous, particularly in areas such as Renfrewshire where airport and supply chain jobs are the backbone of the local economy.”
