A city councillor has said he is "appalled" and "disgusted" at a motion brought forward by a Glasgow MSP on changes to this year's Armed Forces' Day.

Shettleston MSP John Mason proposed that while the Scottish Parliament should "recognise the sacrifices" the armed forces make, the Parliament should "believe that some people use Armed Forces' Day to celebrate military might and power for the promotion of what considers to be an unhealthy British nationalism".

The full motion reads: "That the Parliament notes Armed Forces' Day 2020, which will be marked on 27 June; supports all members of the Armed Forces and recognises the sacrifices that they make; believes however that the Armed Forces have been used on numerous occasions by successive UK administrations to take part in what it considers to have been unjust conflicts; expresses its opposition to nuclear weapons and the UK Government's storing of these in Scotland; believes that some people reportedly use Armed Forces' Day to celebrate military might and power and for the promotion of what it considers to be an unhealthy British nationalism, and promotes negotiation and peace-making as the best form of resolving international disputes."

Conservative councillor Thomas Kerr has slammed the motion as "deeply disrespectful" to the armed forces.

He told the Glasgow Times: "I'm absolutely appalled to read this motion from John Mason today which is extremely disrespectful and shows his contempt for our armed forces.

"We use this week to commemorate, remember and say thanks to all those brave men and women who have put their lives on the line for our country.

"For him to use this for cheap political point scoring is shameful.

"This motion is just the latest in a long line of utterly ridiculous and offensive comments he has made over the years.

"The Holyrood elections are just around the corner and I think the people of Shettleston will remember these comments. Our community deserves so much more."

MSP John Mason said: "I think my motion is clear in that I fully support the armed forces and am happy that we celebrate them.

"However, it seems there has been an attempt to hijack Armed Forces Day by the Loyalist/Unionist/Orange sector of Glasgow.

"I realise the Conservatives in Glasgow have sought to identify with that section of society.  So I would just appeal to the Conservatives to seek to build bridges with both sides of the Sectarian divide in Glasgow and not just the one side."
