DRUMCHAPEL United Football Club successfully delivered 90 packed lunches to children across the community on Monday.

The council-backed programme allows the club to deliver meals across the summer holidays - where the club anticipates to have delivered 1600 lunches by the end of summer.

The local club shared pictures on Twitter, hailing the "fantastic" programme.

A Tweet reads: "Today we started our packed lunch initiative, thanks to Glasgow City Council for the funding to achieve this fantastic programme for young people in our area.

"Ninety lunches delivered today."

Club secretary, Scott Bland said: "Drumchapel United with help from Glasgow City Council are delighted to be able to offer young people at our club and in our community a fantastic lunch during the summer holidays.

"The club anticipates that we will give out around 1600 lunches during the summer.

"This initiative also lets the club engage with young people in our community and shows that our club is more than just a football club but a real community club having a positive impact on our young people in the community."

Local Labour councillor Paul Carey praised the scheme and the team.

He said: "This is a great story. Once again groups like Drumchapel United are standing up for our most vulnerable in society to get through this difficult time.

"All credit to them and other local groups in the area - like G15 Youth Project, 3D Drumchapel and Drumchapel food bank.

"These along with other groups have done and are still doing a fantastic job, a lot of people depend on these groups particularly during this pandemic."
