A Burger King boss has warned that 1600 jobs are at risk in the UK due to the coronavirus crisis.

Only around 370 chains have reopened out of 530 since the UK went into lockdown.

The UK's chief executive Alasdair Murdoch told Newscast the coronavirus crisis could force the company to regrettably close up to 10 per cent of their stores permanently.

He said: “We don’t want to lose any [jobs]. We try very hard not to, but one’s got to assume somewhere between 5% and 10% of the restaurants might not be able to survive.

"It’s not just us – I think this applies to everyone out there in our industry.”

It comes shortly after Chancellor Rishi Sunak encouraged the nation to dine out as he unveiled a £30bn support package to help boost the UK's economic recovery.

However the Burger King boss outlined that Government schemes do not do enough to compensate restaurants for the combination of fixed costs and lost sales throughout the pandemic, telling Newscast: “I don’t think you can ever get over the top of this problem.”
