AN NHS worker has paid tribute to a West End restaurant for providing “hundreds” of meals to frontline and key workers throughout the pandemic.

Located on Great Western Road close to the Gartnavel Hospital, 1051 GWR has been providing workers on the frontline with free meals during their shifts throughout the coronavirus outbreak.

The nurse, who wish not to be named, said: “They put on free food for all of the frontline NHS and key workers and for the vulnerable.

“All they asked is that when you’re down picking up your food to pop in a small donation to their collection bucket. I think that was to get the supplies and ingredients for the different meals.

“They really helped all of us throughout the pandemic.”

It’s understood the eatery had put on free meals for the frontline and key workers on the very first day of lockdown.

The nurse added: “They have been feeding us all since literally day one and it has been an absolute solace for us all.

“I’m not sure if they’re still proving the meals but for the past four months they have been giving us hot, fresh, homemade food and drinks through what has often been a really difficult shift.

“They must have put on hundreds of meals for us all at the hospital and other key workers too.”

The frontline worker hailed the restaurant for their kindness in providing the meals, adding that every dish was “delicious”.

She said: “The meals were absolutely delicious.

“It wasn’t just frozen foods, everything was so fresh. You could tell from the fish and the vegetables – the fish melts in your mouth it has just been such a treat.”

Frontline workers at the Gartnavel Hospital are now planning to hold a Christmas night out at the restaurant as a special way of saying thank you.

David Maguire from 1051 GWR said: "It has been a privilege to have the chance to show our appreciation for local NHS staff who since day one have battled on our behalf without complaint or hesitation.
